An Introduction to the Garden

House

Welcome to our garden, here on the sunny Isle of Wight! We moved to The Old Rectory in Kingston in the Autumn of 2002; our third daughter was just 6 weeks old, and we were excited at the prospect of having space to create a garden. The house was newly renovated, so that meant we could concentrate our efforts on beginning the garden.

Our early attempts were naive, and thwarted by hundreds of rabbits intent on destroying any new plantings we made. The garden was mostly laid to lawn with a few mature shrubs, and hedges on the boundaries, with open grassland surrounding this, so we hadn't realised we had such hungry new neighbours. We have learnt a great deal - usually by trial and error, and a lot of frustration!

Our intent is to create a beautiful setting for the house, something quite formal, with a diverse array of planting to encourage and nurture wildlife. We are also keen to instill in our three daughters a love of, and respect for nature that we hope will stay with them always.
